SMD aluminium electrolytic capacitor (chip type, V-chip) for board layouts, from Nichicon's chip-type catalogue: the aluminium can with its polarity band on top, standing on the plastic platform, and two flat terminals under it. Series UZG (3.9 mm high), UZT (4.5 mm), UWT (5.4 mm), UCD (5.8 to 10 mm) and the bi-polar UWP and UUP, each in the case sizes of its dimension table. Positive terminal at -X. See the README.

SMD electrolytic capacitor

A surface-mount aluminium electrolytic capacitor, the chip type (V-chip): the aluminium can, holding the wound element, stands on a plastic platform, with two flat terminals under the platform. The part is centred on the can's axis and seated on the XY plane, with the terminals along X. The positive terminal is at -X, where the platform's corners are chamfered, and the printed polarity band is on the negative (+X) half of the top. The bi-polar series UWP and UUP have all four platform corners chamfered and no band.

series is the Nichicon series and size the case size, the can's diameter D x the overall height L. Each series has the sizes in its own dimension table:

Series Kind Case sizes (D x L)
UZG 3.95 mm max high, wide temperature range 4 x 3.9, 5 x 3.9, 6.3 x 3.9
UZT 4.5 mm high, wide temperature range 4 x 4.5, 5 x 4.5, 6.3 x 4.5
UWT wide temperature range 4 x 5.4, 5 x 5.4, 6.3 x 5.4, 8 x 5.4
UCD low impedance 4 x 5.8, 5 x 5.8, 6.3 x 5.8, 6.3 x 7.7, 8 x 6.2, 8 x 10, 10 x 7.7, 10 x 10
UWP bi-polar, 5.5 mm high 4 x 5.4, 5 x 5.4, 6.3 x 5.4, 8 x 5.4
UUP bi-polar, 6 mm high 4 x 5.8, 5 x 5.8, 6.3 x 5.8

The dimensions, by can diameter (the same in every series that has it):

D Platform B x C Terminal length A Gap E Terminal width H
4 4.3 x 4.3 1.8 1.0 0.5 to 0.8
5 5.3 x 5.3 2.1 1.3 0.5 to 0.8
6.3 6.6 x 6.6 2.4 2.2 0.5 to 0.8
8 (L 5.4, 6.2) 8.3 x 8.3 3.3 2.3 0.5 to 0.8
8 (L 10) 8.3 x 8.3 2.9 3.1 0.8 to 1.1
10 10.3 x 10.3 3.2 4.5 0.8 to 1.1

B is the platform along the terminals, C across them. A is each terminal's length, from the gap E outwards, so the terminals reach (2A + E - B) / 2 beyond the platform's edge, within the drawings' "0.5 max.". The model uses the middle of H's range: 0.65 and 0.95.

Nichicon, "Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors, Chip Type" catalogue, CAT.8100M (2023), from Nichicon's own site: https://www.nichicon.co.jp/english/_assets/images/products/catalog/corporate/digital/06_Chip_Type_Aluminum_Electrolytic_Capacitors_E.pdf. Each series' "Chip Type" drawing and dimension table (in mm):

  • UZG, page 1: φD 4, 5, 6.3; L 3.90 +0.05/-0.2; A ±0.3, B and C ±0.2, E and H as above.
  • UZT, page 3: the same as UZG with L 4.5 +0.1/-0.2.
  • UWP, page 5 ("Bi-Polarized"): φD 4, 5, 6.3, 8; L 5.4 +0.1/-0.2. The top view draws all four platform corners chamfered and no band.
  • UWT, page 7: 4 x 5.4, 5 x 5.4, 6.3 x 5.4 and 8 x 5.4 (L +0.1/-0.2), with 6.3 x 5.8, 6.3 x 7.7, 8 x 10 and 10 x 10, which UCD has too.
  • UUP, page 15 ("Bi-Polarized"): φD 4, 5, 6.3; L 5.8 ±0.3.
  • UCD, page 25: 4 x 5.8 to 10 x 10; L ±0.3 up to 8 x 6.2 and ±0.5 from 8 x 10.

The top views draw the polarity band on the negative half and chamfer the platform's two corners on the positive side; the side views draw the seal groove round the can just above the platform.

Proportions, for looks only. The drawings show these but don't dimension them:

  • The terminals are 0.2 thick under the platform; the drawings give "0.3 max." for how far they stand below it.
  • The platform is 0.1 x L thick, as the side views draw it. Its chamfered corners are cut 0.15 x B along each side.
  • The can's top edge is bevelled at 45 degrees by 0.03 x D. The seal groove is 0.04 x D deep and 0.06 x L high, 0.1 x L above the platform.
  • The polarity band is the top's circle segment beyond 0.45 x the radius on the negative side, inside the bevel, 0.02 deep and flush with the top.
  • The can is a shell 0.2 thick, about the aluminium sheet such cans are drawn from (the catalogue doesn't give the wall), open at the bottom over the platform. The wound element inside (aluminium foil, paper and electrolyte) and its seal fill it as one solid that follows the groove.
  • Materials are for looks and a rough mass. The can is aluminium. The wound element, roughly 1.2 to 1.5 g/cm³, is shown as pa6 (nylon, 1.14), the nearest in density in the material list. The platform is a heat-resistant plastic (the catalogue: "Plastic platform"), pa6 too, and the printed band is shown with it, in black. The terminals are tin-plated, shown as tin. The catalogue gives no unit weight, so there is no mass check: UWT 6.3 x 5.4 comes to about 0.23 g.

Catalogue models

The old catalogue's CP_Elec_<D>x<L> models (polarised) and C_Elec_<D>x<L> models (non-polar) name a case size but no maker. Each maps to the Nichicon series whose dimension table has exactly that case size: a polarised model to UZG, UZT, UWT or UCD, a non-polar one to the bi-polar UWP or UUP. CP_Elec_6.3x5.4_Nichicon is UWT 6.3 x 5.4 too.

Measured on the reference models (2026-11-06), their cans and platforms are Nichicon's: the diameter, the height and the platform B x C are the table's to 0.01 mm. Their terminals differ: they reach 0.6 beyond the platform's edge, where Nichicon's reach (2A + E - B) / 2, 0.15 to 0.3, and the gap between them differs by up to 0.4. CP_Elec_8x10's terminals are also narrower than Nichicon's 0.8 to 1.1. As for generic pin headers, whose post lengths differ between makers, the mapping follows the body, the can and its platform, and the terminals here are Nichicon's:

Models Terminal width (Nichicon 0.5 to 0.8; 0.8 to 1.1 from 8 x 10) Gap (Nichicon E) Over the terminals (Nichicon 2A + E)

CP_Elec_5x3.9, 5x4.5, 5x5.4, 5x5.8; C_Elec_5x5.4, 5x5.8 0.66 1.50 (1.3) 6.50 (5.5)
CP_Elec_6.3x3.9, 6.3x4.5, 6.3x5.4 (and _Nichicon), 6.3x5.8, 6.3x7.7; C_Elec_6.3x5.4, 6.3x5.8 0.66 1.80 (2.2) 7.80 (7.0)
CP_Elec_8x5.4, 8x6.2; C_Elec_8x5.4 0.66 2.20 (2.3) 9.50 (8.9)
CP_Elec_8x10 0.66 (0.8 to 1.1) 2.20 (3.1) 9.50 (8.9)
CP_Elec_10x7.7, 10x10 0.90 4.60 (4.5) 12.00 (10.9)

Not mapped, as no table read yet: the other sizes, which no Nichicon series in the catalogue has (for example 3 x 5.4, 4 x 5.3, 5 x 5.9, 6.3 x 9.9, 8 x 10.5, 10 x 12.5 and 16 x 22), and the non-polar 3 x 5.4, 6.3 x 7.7, 8 x 6.2, 8 x 10.2 and 10 x 10.2, which neither UWP nor UUP has.
