# Ceramic chip capacitor A multilayer ceramic chip capacitor (MLCC): the ceramic body with a metal termination capping each end. The part is centred on the origin and seated on the XY plane, with the length L, between the terminations, along X and the width W along Y. Each termination covers its end and runs the band B back along the four sides. `size` is the EIA case size (inch code). `thickness` is KEMET's chip thickness code, the part number's thickness, which the capacitance and voltage set. Every case size and thickness code in KEMET's two C0G tables is offered. Each preset is a case size with the thickness code nearest the old catalogue model's height (see below). | Case size | Metric | Length L | Width W | Band B | Thickness codes: T | |---|---|---|---|---|---| | 0201 | 0603 | 0.60 ±0.03 | 0.30 ±0.03 | 0.15 ±0.05 | AB 0.30 | | 0402 | 1005 | 1.00 ±0.05 | 0.50 ±0.05 | 0.30 ±0.10 | BB 0.50, BD 0.55 | | 0603 | 1608 | 1.60 ±0.15 | 0.80 ±0.15 | 0.35 ±0.15 | CF 0.80, CG 0.80, CH 0.85 | | 0805 | 2012 | 2.00 ±0.20 | 1.25 ±0.20 | 0.50 ±0.25 | DM 0.70, DN 0.78, DP 0.90, DE 1.00, DF 1.10, DG 1.25 | | 1206 | 3216 | 3.20 ±0.20 | 1.60 ±0.20 | 0.50 ±0.25 | EB 0.78, EC 0.90, ED 1.00, EE 1.10, EF 1.20, EH 1.60 | | 1210 | 3225 | 3.20 ±0.20 | 2.50 ±0.20 | 0.50 ±0.25 | FB 0.78, FC 0.90, FE 1.00, FF 1.10, FG 1.25, FH 1.55, FM 1.70, FJ 1.85, FK 2.10 | | 1805 | 4513 | 4.50 ±0.50 | 1.27 ±0.38 | 0.60 ±0.35 | NC 1.00 | | 1808 | 4520 | 4.70 ±0.50 | 2.00 ±0.20 | 0.60 ±0.35 | LF 1.00 | | 1812 | 4532 | 4.50 ±0.30 | 3.20 ±0.30 | 0.60 ±0.35 | GB 1.00, GD 1.25, GH 1.40, GG 1.55, GK 1.60, GJ 1.70, GN 1.70, GM 2.00 | | 1825 | 4564 | 4.50 ±0.30 | 6.40 ±0.40 | 0.60 ±0.35 | HB 1.10, HE 1.40, HG 1.60 | | 2220 | 5650 | 5.70 ±0.40 | 5.00 ±0.40 | 0.60 ±0.35 | JB 1.00, JD 1.30, JE 1.40, JF 1.50, JG 1.70, JL 2.00 | | 2225 | 5664 | 5.60 ±0.40 | 6.40 ±0.40 | 0.60 ±0.35 | KE 1.40 | | 3640 | 9210 | 9.10 ±0.40 | 10.20 ±0.40 | 1.27 ±0.40 | MA 1.40, MB 2.00, MC 2.50 | The metric codes are KEMET's. The model uses the nominal values. ## Source KEMET's data sheets, from copies hosted by the distributor Chip and Dip, because KEMET's own file server didn't answer: - KEMET, "Surface Mount Multilayer Ceramic Chip Capacitors (SMD MLCCs), C0G Dielectric, 10 – 250 VDC (Commercial Grade)", C1003_C0G, 8/21/2023, . Page 2, "Dimensions – Millimeters (Inches)": L, W, B and the separation for 0201 to 2225. Page 10, "Table 2A – Chip Thickness/Tape & Reel Packaging Quantities": the thickness codes and their thicknesses. - KEMET, "Surface Mount Multilayer Ceramic Chip Capacitors (SMD MLCCs), High Voltage C0G Dielectric, 500 – 10,000 VDC (Commercial Grade)", C1009_C0G_HV_SMD, 8/18/2023, . Page 2, "Dimensions – Millimeters (Inches)": 3640. "Table 2A": its thickness codes MA, MB and MC. **Proportions, for looks only.** The drawing shows the terminations as caps over the body's ends but doesn't dimension their thickness. Each termination here is a cap 0.05 x T thick, over the ceramic body's end and, for the band B, over its four sides, so the body between the terminations is 0.05 x T in from the terminations' faces. Materials are for looks and a rough mass. The body is ceramic dielectric with nickel electrodes, density about 5 to 6. Titanium nitride, the ceramic in the material list nearest in density (5.2), stands in for it, in the body's tan. The terminations are copper or nickel under matte tin (the part number's "C = 100% Matte Sn"), shown as tin. The sheets give no weight, so there is no mass check. ## Catalogue models The old catalogue's `C__Metric` models are plain blocks of the case's length and width, with no terminations. Each maps to KEMET's chip of that case size where KEMET's length and width are the model's within 0.05 mm. Measured on the reference models (length x width x height): | Model | Measured | KEMET L x W | Preset thickness | |---|---|---|---| | C_0201_0603Metric | 0.6 x 0.3 x 0.3 | 0.60 x 0.30 | AB 0.30 | | C_0402_1005Metric | 1.0 x 0.5 x 0.5 | 1.00 x 0.50 | BB 0.50 | | C_0603_1608Metric | 1.6 x 0.8 x 0.8 | 1.60 x 0.80 | CF 0.80 | | C_0805_2012Metric | 2.0 x 1.24 x 1.25 | 2.00 x 1.25 | DG 1.25 | | C_1206_3216Metric | 3.2 x 1.6 x 1.6 | 3.20 x 1.60 | EH 1.60 | | C_1210_3225Metric | 3.2 x 2.5 x 2.5 | 3.20 x 2.50 | FK 2.10 | | C_1812_4532Metric | 4.5 x 3.2 x 2.5 | 4.50 x 3.20 | GM 2.00 | | C_1825_4564Metric | 4.5 x 6.4 x 2.5 | 4.50 x 6.40 | HG 1.60 | | C_2220_5750Metric | 5.7 x 5.0 x 2.9 | 5.70 x 5.00 | JL 2.00 | | C_2225_5664Metric | 5.6 x 6.4 x 3.4 | 5.60 x 6.40 | KE 1.40 | | C_3640_9110Metric | 9.14 x 10.2 x 2.54 | 9.10 x 10.20 | MC 2.50 | The heights of the old models are the case's width or more, often thicker than any chip KEMET makes in that size, so the preset takes KEMET's thickness code nearest that height. Not mapped, because no KEMET case has their length and width: `C_01005_0402Metric` (0.4 x 0.2), `C_1806_4516Metric` (4.5 x 1.6; KEMET has 1805, 4.50 x 1.27), `C_1808_4520Metric` (4.5 x 2.0; KEMET's 1808 is 4.70 long), `C_2010_5025Metric` (5.0 x 2.5), `C_2220_5650Metric` (5.6 x 5.0; KEMET's 2220 is 5.70 x 5.00), `C_2512_6332Metric` (6.3 x 3.2) and `C_2816_7142Metric` (7.1 x 4.2).
